The National Cycling Centre at Manchester - Indoor BMX track
With the London 2012 Olympics in the summer, UK BMX tracks are on the increase and it is only good news for the sport in this country. The new 24 million pound indoor BMX track has opened in Manchester and has already held some British cycling bmx natioanl races. The general view is that the track and facility is amazing as is well worth the trip. There is free easy parking on a none race day and you can book the track for £80 for one hour once you have completed the bmx track induction course that costs around £10.00. You can also hire a coach for an extra £20 and hire a bike if you are in need of equipment.
As you can see from the photo's there are two start hills, one for the pros and elite riders and one up and coming riders and the younger riders. The local school's have PE lessons there which is very encouraging as this could involved children who otherwise would not participate in sports.
Hopefully this facility will push our GB cycling teams on to achieve even more finalists in future UCI BMX World Championships and the Olympic's. We currently have Shanaze Reade who is the Women's World Champion at BMX racing and hopefully she can come away with the Gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics as she had a fall in the final on the last straight in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The BMX racing in the London 2012 Olympics may even steal the lime light if the media helps and allows it, just hope the camera angles are good to help promote the sport like the ski and board cross impressed the general public in the Winter Olympics.
With the potental of hold major events like the UCI European BMX championship, there is seating for 2000 to 3000 spectators depending on the size of the event and they normally charge around £5 for a spectators ticket. This is a brand new facility which is within the Natioanl cycling centre which also holds the super Velodrome which was used in the Common Wealth games, so you could also have a go at riding a fixed wheel bike on a beginners induction session.
So looking at the facility above we have a basis to form a great and sucessful GB BMX team for years to come and hopefully get more children involved in sports and away form their vrtual world's on game consoles. Who knows you may be able to plug your BMX or road bike into a Xbox or Playstation oneday.
Please check on the link to the National Cycling Centre for more information and session times.
